DOLLY talks to Australian Idol winner Natalie Gauci
Monday, December 13, 2010
DOLLY sat down with Australian Idol winner and Tune in Tokyo front-woman Natalie Gauci to find out about her musical journey and the band's exciting new release 'Dreamer'.
How did Tune in Tokyo come about?
Tune in Tokyo first started about a year ago when I met the DJ/producer, Paul Brandoli. We got together, I played him a few of my original songs and he played me a couple of his, and we just thought it was a music match made in heaven. We wrote the song 'Dreamer' straight off the bat, and people loved it, the record label loved it. We honestly didn't know how much support we would get for the track.
Where did the band's name come from?
In the movie Girls Just Want to Have Fun, there's a bit when they're at a party and one of the characters yells out "tune in Tokyo". We just thought it was really funny.
What was it like shooting the video clip for 'Dreamer'?
It was amazing. Really, really fun. I've always wanted to do a performance video. I really wanted to have dancers and create something fun. So the director and I came up with a concept about being someone different, thinking outside the square of your daily life. I've always been that kind of person to dream about the things I wanted to do and make them real.
Where do you get inspiration for songs?
I usually get my inspiration from real-life experiences. With 'Dreamer', I thought back to when I was going through a hard time a few years ago when people were saying I would never make it. It was hard, but I just had to focus on what I wanted and not listen to anyone else. I get inspired by emotions as well.
What was it like winning Australian Idol?
Winning Australian Idol felt like a dream. It was amazing and a world of its own really. It changed my life and I look back now and get really emotional.
What were you like in high school?
In high school I was quite cheeky and really into my music. Every musical, every concert, I had to be in it. I lived for music at school.
