how do you sing in the whistle register like Mariah Carey? I was wondering is there a special tecnique for that and can do you do it?
with lots of practice! there is a special technique and i can do it very badly. i haven't really taken out the time to perfect it to be honest. if you have a look at some of earlier (live) tracks on youtube you can see that its almost like a squeel in tune, she has really great control too. i'd relate it to a quiet scream without straining. hmmm not sure if thats coming across how i meant..

Nat, what university did you go to study a degree in music was it a good music course and did you enjoy it and would you recommend other musicians to do it?
i went VCA secondary school and that is where i learnt most of musical knowledge and jazz knowledge.. then i studied at Monash Uni, but i did opera there and it wasnt right for me. i would def recommend monash uni in melbourne - the jazz/ contempory course. they have some amazing teachers there at the moment.

hi Nat I'm a singer as well I was wondering has your voice ever cracked on stage live performing and what was your reaction and how did you carry on?
yes. when i was on tour for winner's journey i sang a show on a Wednesday night ( i cant remember which is show it was exactly) i was tired but had to soldier on.. i used it to my advantage and tried to make it more a scream/belt rather than a crack to work through it, using the right breathing technique. it helped me a lot actually, after that my voice was working ok and the next few shows were ok. people want to see emotion and sometimes cracks are ok if you're feeling and expressing the song.. try not to puch you're voice out too hard or harsh.. let it come naturally

Nat, do you realize you are the only idol winner in history NOT to put an originals album out? ( Winners journey doesnt count). Why were other creative singer- songwriter idol winners able to work with Sony ( Damien, Wes etc) and you werent? You were on the 5th season. You cant say you didnt know how other careers from idol have turned out. You must have known that someone new to a major label wouldn't get carte blanche on their album and that compromises and working with Sony would be required. And yet you come out now and say you left Sony because of creative differences? EVERY artist has creative differences with their record label. Most dont throw away a major label contract because of hard headedness.
yes i am hard headed at times! true! can't help but be myself. i loved my experience with Sony. it taught a lot about what i want and don't want from my career long term. i'm sorry if i've disappointed you. i'm working on some very exciting new projects and idol has opened up so many amazing doors for me. sony is like any relationship in life.. some work and some don't, but we still give it a good hard go!!

Just read some (mostly) nice comments about your dance tune 'Without You' in the starobserver entertainment section online. "Without You is a moody electro number sung by none other than 2007 Australian Idol winner Natalie Gauci. Some might shy away from putting a name like Natalie Gauci on their CD — a connection with Australian Idol hardly does wonders for a DJ’s street cred. “Yeah, but I guess if it is a great track, you can’t deny it and you can’t not play it." Did you see that?
wow!! no i hadnt seen that! i'll check it out! thanks for the heads up!

Hi Nat, I understand your position on creative control on what music you record and have always respected your stance, after all it is your name and reputation at stake if you had given in to Sony and recorded and released something you were not happy with it would have compromised your career. I love "Without you" and your EP "I'm ready" My question is do you think the songs on you Album will be more like the 4 songs on 'I'm ready' or "Without you" or a combination of both? by Gary_Roche

Nat, I still don't get WHY you went on idol when you knew the prize was a contract with Sony when you obviously didnt want to compromise with your music. Surely you didnt expect that Sony would give an idol winner full creative control ( and if you did you were being very unrealistic), so why go on the show in the first place if you didnt want a Sony contract? You know, there'd be a lot of kids out there who would've actually liked the prize that you thumbed your nose at. You took their spot on idol and had what to show for it? nada. In fact kids voted for you to win the show and you didnt even want the contract? Can't help thinking that's disrespectful. If you wanted to stay indie, then stay indie. Just my two cents.
fair enough! there's nothing wrong with having respect for yourself also. i loved everything idol had to offer. i don't expect people to understand.

So Sony was stuck with an idol winner they were obligated to sign but you had no intention of wanting to work with them ( like EVERY other idol winner has)? What a waste of everyone's time. SO my question is, why would someone like yourself, who doesnt want to compromise at all with your music and wants full creative control, go on idol when you didnt want the Sony contract in the first place?
i never said that. i have always wanted a sony contract. i was in experienced and new to the music industry. i have no further comments.

hey Nat, do you have any advice for aspiring singers and musicians in how to make it in the music industry and would going on reality tv shows such as idol and the x factor help improve the chances of breaking into the music industry?
where do i start! if i had a son/daughter and they asked me if they should go on idol or x factor, i would say "not if you want to write your own music and have full creative control over your career". if you're happy singing other people's songs and being directed in every way, then yes, idol is for you! if you want to get experience singing on stage and in front of millions of people then yes idol is great! if you're a true artist and have strong opinions and beliefs about music then idol is not the right path to get you there any quicker, if anything it will slow you down. the best thing for the aspiring artist is to move over seas, develop your skills and writing, learn an instrument (if you're singer) and take your music around the world. Australia is a small little place and music is global. take big risks. networking is HUGE part of it. and to be honest i wouldnt be where i am today without idol, just ask yourself one question, would you be happy with the stigma?

i have made some blogs that were kind a secret.
