FORMER Australian Idol Natalie Gauci is ready for her close up. Gauci will finally release a debut album - four years after winning Idol, two years after ending a major label deal that was her prize.
The album, titled HaHaHa, will also detail Gauci's personal and professional highs and lows, including a split from her husband of two years, Hamish Cowan.
It hasn't been an easy road. After Gauci and record label Sony had an amicable split in 2009, she stumbled.
"I went through a struggle of identity,'' she said. "I knew what i wanted, but didn't know how to get it.
"I married Hamish and he was really supportive and encouraging. He gave me confidence and courage to pursue what I wanted, and not what others wanted.
"That's really hard to do, especially when you win Australian Idol.''
A song from that self-discovery period, Best Of Me, is featured in a new movie, Big Mamma's Boy, and is a stepping stone to the album.
She has also dabbled in a techno-pop side project called Tune In Tokyo.
Gauci describes HaHaHa as a portrait of her life to this point. "It's about getting up and moving on,'' she says.
Gauci and Cowan split in March.
"Hamish and I have separated and decided not to get back together,'' she said.
"Most of my album will be about that - we had extreme highs and lows.
"We had a strong and passionate relationship. Very intense.
"It didn't work out the way we planned,'' Gauci said.
"We grew together every single day, but we didn't balance each other out.''
Gauci has a cameo role in Big Mamma's Boy.
She also runs a singing and piano school.
"Music is therapy for me,'' she says. "Without it, I wouldn't survive. It's got me through the hard times.
"But I love to help people connect with their spiritual and emotional side when they sing.
"It empowers them like it's empowered me.''
Natalie Gauci performs at Bennetts Lane on July 3. Best Of Me is out now.
