Former Australian Idol winner Natalie Gauci has thrown her soul back into songwriting following the break up of her marriage.
The singer confirmed that she and husband Hamish Cowan, the lead singer of Melbourne band Cordrazine, parted ways two months ago.
The couple wed on a boat in 2009 but their relationship began veering towards rocks just a year later, according to Gauci.
"It has been a very traumatic time for me," she told AAP from her home in Melbourne.
"My music makes me happy but other than that it's been really tough.
"There was a very dramatic end because it was a very intense loving relationship but it just didn't work out."
Since the split, Gauci has busied herself creating music for a variety of projects.
Her first release is Best Of Me, a soulful ballad set to feature in the forthcoming film, Big Mamma's Boy, starring Holly Valance and Frank Lotito.
An album, Ha Ha Ha, will follow later in the year which was written during the darkest times of Gauci's marriage breakdown.
The 29-year-old admits most of her songs are written about failed relationships, a pattern which began when her parents divorced as a teen.
"I have to be chipper about things now because when I do shows I like to talk about the songs and where they've come from," she said.
Gauci, who won Australian Idol in 2007 but split with her record label Sony two years later, is putting the finishing touches to a forthcoming solo tour.
Picking up production techniques via her electro-pop side project Tune In Tokyo, the singer is learning how to perform as a one-girl-band.
"It used to be me with a band or just me and a piano, but now it's me, keys and a MacBook Pro," she said.
"I'll be mixing my own effects in, a few drum beats and some string samples, and I'm praying I get it right or I'll be in trouble."
Gauci will then head to Europe in her Tune In Tokyo guise after breaking the dance charts inItaly, the UK and Germany.
Finally her father's assertion she "write a happy song for a change" seems to be paying off. For now, Gauci is happy to immerse herself in music while the dust settles.
"I haven't quite figured out relationships so I think I'm best single for now," she said.
"I think if you do what you're passionate about you will meet the right people."
Best Of Me by Natalie Gauci is out now. She plays the following shows:
June 23 - Brisbane Jazz Club
June 24 - El Rocco, Kings Cross, Sydney
June 25 - Coogee Diggers, Coogee, Sydney
June 26 - The Brass Monkey, Cronulla, Sydney
June 30 - The Promethean, Adelaide
July 3 - Bennett's Lane, Melbourne
